Greetings from the President
After various attempts over the years to even out the divisional structure of the League, the decision was taken at the 2018 AGM to extend to four - more or less - equal divisions. These will each be made up of six, or seven teams. To try to ensure that divisions stay at an approximately equal size in the future the proposal that clubs will not have an option to decline promotion if (one of) their team(s) comes top of a lower division - was passed.
Wrexham have had to withdraw their 2nd team, but we hope it won't be too long before they re-enter a second team into the League. In compensation however we welcome Tattenhall back and are glad that Frodsham will continue to run two teams. Furthermore, both Buckley/Mold and Chester are entering a new team into the fourth division. All this means that there will be 10 clubs and 26 teams in the League this season - a smallish, but maybe significant increase from last season, which is encouraging.
Captains need to be aware of the grading restriction in division 4 and other alterations to Divisional Rule 9 about player nominations. There is also an extra paragraph in the Captain's Checklist as well as alterations to other paragraphs in this list.
I am glad to report that a new competition is starting: the Under 120 K/O Tournament for teams of five boards, the winner of which will be presented with the Bill Davies Trophy.
We thank Pete Lovatt for his work as Treasurer and welcome Pat Ridley into this post which he will combine with being ECF Membership Secretary. After 65 years since the formation of the League it was decided to dispense with the handbook and instead rely on the website. We thank Steve Lloyd for his previous efforts as Handbook Secretary - his additional position as Website Officer now becomes even more important.
As mentioned at the AGM, this season will be my sixth as President which is probably enough for anyone - or any league. Additionally, my wife and I are gradually moving house and very likely will end up nearer our two sons who both work near Oxford, so this will have to be my last season.
I would like to thank those Officers who have helped run the League with me for the last six years, as well as those members of C&D clubs who, over the board, have given me such satisfaction - and grief - for the past forty five years or so.
Have a very good season !
